In a previous explanation of the difference between creativity and knowledge I described them as being related to each other with similar boundaries.   I also said that knowledge is being able to understand concepts, where creativity is using those concepts to produce something new.  In order to express creativeness one has to be knowledgeable first.  Being a Graphic Design Major I strive to become the most creative and knowledgeable person I can be to help me be successful at what I do.
The terms, creativity and knowledge, are related to my life all the time.  Being a sophomore I have learned the fundamental necessities to move on to more Graphic Design specific courses.  If I did not understand the basics I would not be able to move on to the next course.  For example in order to take 3D design and color one has to be able to pass 2D design and color prior.  This is important because the second course talks about things that the primary course would have already taught.  In terms of Mathematics one cannot learn to multiply before being able to add first.  The same goes towards art.  I learn more and more every day which increases my knowledge on the subject which will help me in the long run.  In my other explanation I said that an artist’s knowledge is determined by experience, awareness and acquaintance.  Relating these factors to my own life I am able to say that I am an amateur due to my small experience.  But as the years go by my expertise will increase which will in turn increase my knowledge.  My individual awareness of materials is pretty average due to the fundamental courses I have previous taken which provided me with the knowledge of how materials such as cardboard, clay, and charcoal work.  I still have a lot to learn but am willing to take it all in.
Because I acquire some knowledge in art I am able to show some creativity in my work.  When given projects there are guidelines that must be followed but by experiencing certain techniques I know that there are ways to twist the rules in a way that I can show some creativity.  It is a way of “thinking outside of the box”.  The way to increase creativity, for me, is by brainstorming.  When I think of an idea for a project, poster design, etc, I first doodle out some ideas.  Usually these first brainstorms are very ordinary and something most other designers would have thought of right away too.  In order to break that shell of being ordinary I mess around with my ideas and create different ideas.  In a previous project my final piece went through more than forty brainstorms and variations before it was complete.  To have a successful and perfect piece an artist has to be able to use their knowledge and creativity to come up with something spectacular and “out of the box”.

The difference between knowledge and creativity can be difficult to distinguish.  The two terms are related to each other and cross similar boundaries which make it hard to differentiate between their meanings.    Knowledge is being able to understand concepts, where creativity is using those concepts to create something new whether it is a photograph, painting, or sculpture.  In terms of which comes first I believe that knowledge definitely comes before creativity.
An artist’s knowledge can be determined by their experience, awareness, and acquaintance.  With time an individual can increase their expertise in a certain subject, in this example art.  An artist needs to understand what they are working with before carrying on to the next step.  For example, a ceramist needs to know how to make clay before he can work with it and form a pot.  If the ceramist doesn’t understand how the medium works before he throws a pot he will not succeed.  Being aware of your how things operate is a key concept that can factor into knowledge.  For example a ceramist, recalls a past experience of his pot drying out before getting the chance to trim the foot, decides to cover his pots with plastic to prevent them from drying out so fast.  Being aware of the possibilities in certain occasions increases an individual’s knowledge.  Knowledge is not something people are born with, but is something that builds up with experience.  The more experience someone has on a subject it is apparent that they also have knowledge on the subject.  For example you would probably not want an amateur car repair man who is still learning the ropes fixing your car as opposed to a repair man who has been in the business for fifteen years.  The more experience an individual has the more knowledge they have and the more they are respected.
Creativity can be achieved after knowledge is understood.  Creativity is the action of using one’s knowledge and using your imagination to create something out of the ordinary.  After understanding how clay reacts in certain conditions a ceramist can begin trying different alternatives to make their work “their own”.  Creativity is taking the ordinary to the next level.  Instead of making an everyday bowl the ceramist can add texture, color, contrast, and other concepts to make it unique.  Creativity, like knowledge, can grow by experience.  A person’s creativity is often influenced by something in the world.  People obtain information in visual ways every day.  Certain visuals stand out more than others and can effect an individual’s perception on future experiences.  For example, a fashion designer after seeing an interesting bright image on a billboard becomes influenced it and decides to create a dress that portrays similar elements as the one in the billboard.  She is not copying the design but using it to help design a dress to make people react the same way she did when she saw the billboard.  As she goes on with life she witnesses more and more images that strike her attention that she will combine to make a clothing line.  People tend to build off of each other to make their original idea better.

Three day camping trip? I'm in!  The Intermediate Ceramics students and some Biology students enjoyed a weekend in the Sierra Nevadas.  We left on Friday, October1, morning around 9am after packing up the trucks with food, clothes and other necessities.  As we left Pacific all I could think of was the amazing weekend that was in store for me.  We got to Malakoff after a few windy roads causing some to feel sick.  After unpacking the truck and Expeditions, it was time to set up the tents.  Having some experience I reminded my tent mates to put up the fly: we didnt want to wake up soaked from moisture in the air (or rain).

After everyone was situated we decided to adventure through the ghost mining town.  Towering trees, stagnant green lake named Blair Lake, assortment of greenery, and a creek. Climbing steep corroded hills, a Lauren and I found trees whose roots were out of the ground forming a cave like structure. Not being able to walk down we slid down and left behind some blood.  Whats life if you don't live a little, Lauren says.

We meet up with the rest of the group near the creek and listen to the descriptions of any photosynthesized organism.  I will never forget how to spot a douglas fir pine cone.  Their cones look as if there are mice trying to get to the middle and find...... DOUG! hense "doug"las fir.

After enjoying a night of smores and campfire stories, we get ready for bed.  Saturday, we get to dig the clay and climb through the tunnel. A cliff-ish plane with a bunch of artists hacking at it with pick axes to retreave their prized clay bodies.  Worth it. I resist the temptation of climbing up this slope and take pictures instead.  We walk on and see some rusty mining equipment and bear crap.  After the Professors get the clay they desired we start heading towards the tunnel.

A pitch black, cold, man made, 700 meter tunnel and 25 people with 8 lights and the occasional flash from a camera.  limited light made   the experience more interesting.  Reminding us of indiana jones, pirates of the caribean, and the goonies kept our minds from wandering and imagining the rocks crushing our bodies in an instant.  The bottom of the cave had water streaming through that you wanted to avoid.  Everyone made it out alive... but not everyone stayed dry.

A tour of the Ghost town was given by the park ranger.  She informed us that Malakoff was the first hydrolic mining field.  Malakoff is in the town North Bloomfield which used to be known as Humbug (named after the lake that was there) but had to change it due to the numerous other Humbug, CA's.  We got to go in the stores and houses of this little ghost town (and got in trouble a few times for touching things... though there wasn't a "do not touch sign" anywhere).  Professor Monika told us, its better to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission.  Our tour ended with a pretty upset park ranger at us touching many artifacts.

More smores and more campfire stories go by at night as we enjoy our last night in the mountains away from Stockton.  We go to bed not looking forward to leaving Malakoff the next morning at 7am.  It rains that night and I think of the other people who didnt put up their flies and are now outside in the rain fixing their tent.

We woke up to hear about a prank that was pulled on Professor Burkett the prevous night involving a cucumber.  After some laughs and breakfast we head out of Malakoff and stop by the Yuba River.  Lauren and I go down stream and explore the cavacious rocks.  After falling in a few times we decide to live a little, when will we get the chance to do this agian: and jump in the water with our clothes on.  We slide off of some rocks into the refreshing water.  Sooner than expected its time to leave and anticipate for next year.

A weekend without technology was a good mental break.
